The Wise Old Enby
A researcher who lives and works at Hilltop Workshop on Stillreach, and who knows far more about unusual minerals than they first let on.
The Wise Old Enby is a researcher at Hilltop Workshop, on the planet Stillreach. They are nonbinary, and they go by they and them.
You will know them by the blue party hat, the long white hair and braided beard, the amber goggles, and a well-worn staff that is as much equipment as walking stick. They came to the hill following something odd in the ground, and stayed.
Finding them
Hilltop Workshop is two walks from Stillreach Landing Station, by way of Windward Track (see Flying the Rivet to Stillreach). Anyone who reaches it can talk to them about the workshop and about Stillreach; no Mission or item is needed.
The unusual mineral
They are the person Not From Around Here leads to. Bring them a Rune Fragment or an intact Runestone and they can tell you what it is; afterwards, About RuneSpace and Where to Find Fragments are things you can ask them about again whenever you like.
The Resonance Rig
Once they have explained RuneSpace, their Resonance Rig is yours to use, and they teach you Runeworking in Seeker? I Hardly Know Her!, then send you looking for your first Resonance Echo in First Resonance Echo. Research Jobs
Talk to them and choose Research Jobs for repeatable work. They keep one research job going at a time per character; story missions are separate and never blocked. Each job lends you one item that takes a normal Inventory slot and its real weight, so you need room for it. You cannot sell, trade, store, stash or drop a loaned item, and none of these jobs pays any XP. To give a job up, choose Abandon Assignment in its Mission Log entry, from anywhere, or choose Destroy on the loaned item in your Inventory and confirm: either way you lose its progress and the loaned item, and nothing is paid. Once the Courier packet has been handed to FedHex there is nothing left to destroy, so use Abandon Assignment.
Research Courier lends a 2 kg Sealed Research Packet. Carry it to the FedHex terminal at Stillreach Landing Station (see Credits & Trading), choose Deliver Research Packet, then return to them to collect 25 Credits.
Geological Field Survey lends a 0.1 kg Geological Sample Case. Collect one surface sample at each of Prospecting Quarry, The Dry Seam and Harmonic Workings, in any order, at eight game ticks (4.8 seconds) apiece, then return to collect 75 Credits. It is not Mining and needs no tool or skill.
Resonance Calibration opens once they have explained RuneSpace. It lends a 0.1 kg Resonance Sampler: record a signature at The Low Hum (also eight ticks), then return to them and hear them out. They can then open a passage to Crash Site on Skatboll. Nothing happens until you confirm Teleport Now; Not Yet keeps your sampler and the job. You and what you carry make the trip, but your Rivet, its fuel and your Cargo Hold stay where they are parked. It costs no Credits and pays no XP.
